Do Binaural Beats Actually Work? What the Research Says

Do Binaural Beats Actually Work? What the Research Says

I built Binaural Tones, so you might expect me to tell you binaural beats are magic. I’m not going to. I’m going to tell you what the research actually says, what it doesn’t say yet, and why I still listen to them almost every day.

First, what we’re talking about

A binaural beat happens when each ear hears a slightly different tone through headphones. Play 220 Hz in your left ear and 230 Hz in your right, and your brain doesn’t hear two notes. It hears one tone that pulses 10 times a second. That pulse isn’t in the audio at all. Your brain creates it. (If you want the full explanation, start with What Are Binaural Beats?)

The idea behind using them is called entrainment: a steady pulse in a certain range may nudge your brain toward the matching state, like slower rhythms for sleep and faster ones for focus.

What the studies show

There is real evidence of an effect

The biggest look at the question is a 2019 meta-analysis that pooled 22 studies. It found binaural beats had small-to-moderate effects on anxiety, on how people perceive pain, and on some kinds of memory and attention. That’s not nothing. For a pair of headphones and a free app, small-to-moderate is a decent return.

But “entrainment” is still debated

A 2023 systematic review looked specifically at brainwave recordings. Some studies found the brain followed the beat. Others didn’t. The results were inconsistent, partly because every lab used different tones, different session lengths and different ways of measuring.

So the fair summary is this: many people feel a difference, and there’s evidence for some effects, but science hasn’t nailed down exactly how it works or who it works best for.

Why the results are so mixed

  • Different setups. A 10-minute session at one carrier tone isn’t the same as 30 minutes at another, but studies get lumped together.
  • People are different. Some people hear the beat clearly and some barely notice it. I wrote a whole post on why binaural beats work better for some people.
  • Bad audio. Clicks, pops and harsh edges pull your attention right back out. That’s one of the things I worked hardest to fix when I built the app.
  • Expectations. If you go in expecting a miracle in 30 seconds, you’ll be disappointed. If you treat it like a practice, you’ll notice more.

Why I still use them every day

I have ADD, and focus has been a fight for me my whole life. I built Binaural Tones because listening to binaural beats helps me focus and block out the distractions around me. It keeps me centered. When I’m deep in a project, a steady tone in my headphones is the difference between drifting and actually getting it done.

I also use it to slow down. Deep Relax, one of the Morphing journeys that glides from Alpha down to Theta, is one of my favorites for meditation.

Is part of that the ritual? Probably. Putting on headphones and starting the same tone tells my brain it’s time to work, or time to rest. I don’t think that makes it less real. It’s part of why it works for me.

My advice to skeptics

Don’t take my word for it, and don’t take a study’s word for it either. Test it on yourself:

  • Use headphones and keep the volume low.
  • Pick one goal, like focus or sleep, and one tone that matches it.
  • Listen for 20 to 30 minutes at the same time every day for a week.
  • Notice how you feel compared with days you skip it.
